The Aha moments and my playlist

We Hate Pink, in collaboration with The Gate hosted “The aha moments and my playlist”.

Not all of us are music lovers, but music plays a big part in many people's lives. Each of us has our way of connecting with the music. Music has a direct connection to our personal experiences. You may notice that often, as you sit listening to a playlist, your mind ends far from where you started. The Mozart Effect from the ’90 was the first study to link classical music to increase spatial cognition.

In 2017, researchers found the effects that different types of music have on creativity. Based on the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) study, an individual's cognitive capacity has two segments, divergent thinking and convergent thinking, wherein one is more dominant than the other. The study concludes that listening to upbeat music increases the capacity to be creative of divergent thinkers. This showed that happy music with high emotions increases creativity. Specifically, it increases the number of ideas.

During our panel discussion, we explored how to use music to get ideas flowing and drive creativity. As a feminist community platform, we focused on artists and creatives. We analysed the latest figures on women in the creative and music industry and discussed how these numbers could change for the better. We also shared UN Women UK's research about sexual harassment in the music industry, at festivals and in public spaces and information about the project "Safe Spaces Now", committing to tackling sexual harassment at live events and making spaces safe for women and marginalised groups.
